When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
I'd let the old Earth take a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in place of pearls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around, she came.

But it's a long, long while from May to Decemeber
And the days grow short when you reach September
And the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
And I haven't got time for the waiting game
And the wine dwindles down to a precious brew
September, November - and these few vintage years
I'd share with you. These vintage years I'd share with you.

But it's a long, long while from May to December
And the days grow short when you reach September
And I have lost one tooth and I walk a little lame
And I haven't got time for the waiting game

And the days turn to gold as they grow few
September, November,
And these few golden days I'd spend with you
These golden days I'd spend with you.

When you meet with the young men early in Spring
They court you in song and rhyme
They woo you with words and clover ring
But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And a plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time

But it's a long, long while from May to December
Will a clover ring last till you reach September
And I'm not quite equipped for the waiting game
But I have a little money and I have a little fame
And the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November,
And these few precious days I'd spend with you
These precious days I'd spend with you.

September Song by Lou Reed on Grooveshark

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon
I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief
Love is pure gold and time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, ev'rything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

In any case, his life appears quieter than it was in 2007 when the Daily Mail dubbed him "Coogan the Barbarian." He lives outside Brighton, near to Clare, his 16-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, in a mansion he shares with Elle Basey, a 23-year-old lingerie model he met when he was guest-editing Loaded. "And there I, ah, I draw a veil," he says. "I don't like to bang on about my personal life." He spends his spare time at his house in the Lake District. "I don't like going to sunny places on holiday," he says, with a baffled sneer. "I love Britain." He walks and reads – classic-car magazines and history books. This weekend, he went cycling on the South Downs. "They are not particularly exciting things", he says. "But I like doing them."
His professional life is rather more serious, too. Comedy leaves him a bit cold these days. "You get older and you want something more. I do love comedy, I'd just rather use it as a device to do something of substance." He is already working on a new screenplay with Pope ("He's workmanlike, good at the big picture. I over-analyse, like the myopia of it.") loosely based on his childhood. And he is writing his autobiography. It will only cover half of his life, probably up to when Partridge was born.
"So I don't have to roll my sleeves up and start slagging off people I work with and upset them. I'll only have to mildly criticise my friends and family. And they won't sue me." Will it be a happy tale? "Yeah. I'll try and manufacture some sort of trauma obviously. Make it more interesting. The content will be slightly underwhelming – 90 per cent of my childhood was very happy. I wasn't buggered by a priest, no one molested me. The only thing that happened was I had to go bed early and miss Bouquet of Barbed Wire. And I wasn't allowed a new Chopper for Christmas."
He was a dreamy child, always fantasising about films, or life in London, where everyone "lived in Mayfair, in expensive apartments, and drove Bentleys." At school, he was a talented mimic, but a reluctant one. "I wasn't the performing monkey. There were people in my class who goofed around and I thought they were idiots," he says. He is not sure what he would have done, had he flopped in showbusiness. "I dread to think. I probably would have drifted into teaching. God knows, I've never had a proper job."

disparos

I was five and he was six
we rode on horse made of sticks
he wore black and i wore white
he would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down
bang bang, i hit the ground
bang bang, that awful sound
bang bang, my baby shot me down.

Seasons came and changed the time
when i grew up, i called him mine
he would always laugh and say
"remember when we used to play?"

Bang bang, i shot you down
bang bang, you hit the ground
bang bang, that awful sound
bang bang, i used to shoot you down.

Music played and people sang
just for me the church bells rang.
Now he's gone, i don't know why
and till this day, sometimes i cry
he didn't even say goodbye
he didn't take the time to lie.

Caroline says that I'm just a toy
she wants a man, not just a boy
Oh, Caroline says, ooohhh, Caroline says

Caroline says she can't help but be mean
or cruel, or oh so it seems
Oh, Caroline says, Caroline says

She say she doesn't want a man who leans
Still she is my Germanic -

- Queen
Yeah, she's my Queen

The things she does, the things she says
people shouldn't treat others that way
But at first I thought I could take it all

Just like poison in a vial
hey, she was often very vile
But of course, I thought I could take it all

Caroline says that I'm not a man
so she'll go get it catch as catch can
Oh, Caroline says, yeah, Caroline says

Caroline says moments in time
can't continue to be only mine
Oh, Caroline says, yeah, Caroline says

She treats me like I am a fool
But to me she's still a German -

- Queen, ooohhh, she's my -
- Queen, ya ...
Queen, hey baby, she's my Queen
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
(Queen)
...

Caroline says
as she gets up off the floor
Why is it that you beat me
it isn't any fun

Caroline says
as she makes up her eyes
You ought to learn more about yourself
think more than just I

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her

What is in her mind
what is in her mind

Caroline says
as she gets up from the floor
You can hit me all you want to
but I don't love you anymore

Caroline says
while biting her lip
Life is meant to be more than this
and this is a bum trip

But she's not afraid to die
all her friends call her "Alaska"
When she takes speed, they laugh and ask her

What is in her mind
what is in her mind

She put her fist through the window pane
It was such a funny feeling

It's so cold in Alaska
it's so cold in Alaska
It's so cold in Alaska

Stephanie says
That she wants to know
Why she's given half her life,
To people she hates now

Stephanie says
When answering the phone
What country shall I say
Is calling from across the world

But she's not afraid to die,
The people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her
Cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

Stephanie says
That she wants to know
Why it is though she's the door
She can't be the room

Stephanie says
But doesn't hang up the phone
What sea shell she is calling
From across the world

But she's not afraid to die,
The people all cal her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her
Cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

They're asking
Is it good or bad
It's such an icy feeling
It's so cold in Alaska,
It's so cold in Alaska,
It's so cold in Alaska

Grande Stephen, grande. Goodbye, Stephen.

Lou Reed's Berlin is a disaster, taking the listener into a distorted and degenerate demimonde of paranoia, schizophrenia, degradation, pill-induced violence and suicide. There are certain records that are so patently offensive that one wishes to take some kind of physical vengeance on the artists that perpetrate them. Reed's only excuse for this kind of performance (which isn't really performed as much as spoken and shouted over Bob Ezrin's limp production) can only be that this was his last shot at a once-promising career. Goodbye, Lou.

al despertar

Hubo un tiempo que fue hermoso
y fui libre de verdad,
guardaba todos mis sueños
en castillos de cristal.
Poco a poco fui creciendo,
y mis fábulas de amor
se fueron desvaneciendo
como pompas de jabón.

Te encontraré una mañana
dentro de mi habitación
y prepararás la cama
para dos.

Es larga la carretera
cuando uno mira atrás
vas cruzando las fronteras
sin darte cuenta quizás.
Tomate del pasamanos
porque antes de llegar
se aferraron mil ancianos
pero se fueron igual.

Te encontraré una mañana
dentro de mi habitación
y prepararás la cama
para dos.

Quisiera saber tu nombre
tu lugar, tu dirección
si te han puesto teléfono,
también tu numeración.
Te suplico que me avises
si me vienes a buscar,
no es porque te tenga miedo,
sólo me quiero arreglar.

Te encontraré una mañana
dentro de mi habitación
y prepararás la cama
para dos.
