AUBADE

I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what’s really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.
The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
— The good not done, the love not given, time
Torn off unused — nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;
But at the total emptiness for ever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.
This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says No rational being
Can fear a thing it will not feel, not seeing
That this is what we fear — no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anaesthetic from which none come round.
And so it stays just on the edge of vision,
A small unfocused blur, a standing chill
That slows each impulse down to indecision.
Most things may never happen: this one will,
And realisation of it rages out
In furnace-fear when we are caught without
People or drink. Courage is no good:
It means not scaring others. Being brave
Lets no one off the grave.
Death is no different whined at than withstood.
Slowly light strengthens, and the room takes shape.
It stands plain as a wardrobe, what we know,
Have always known, know that we can’t escape,
Yet can’t accept. One side will have to go.
Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring
In locked-up offices, and all the uncaring
Intricate rented world begins to rouse.
The sky is white as clay, with no sun.
Work has to be done.

Philip Larkin

Otras que he hallado no me convencen.
‘Aubade’ is a depressing poem, although – as Stephen Fry has said in conversation with Jonathan Bate – it remains a popular poem because it reminds us that out of dark and depressing thoughts, great art can come. There is something consolatory about it, for all its bleakness. Christopher Ricks is fond of quoting Frank Kermode on the limitations of some art which is ‘too consolatory to console’, the implication being that we sometimes like our art to face uncomfortable truths and to transmute horrifying realities into great poetry. ‘Aubade’ is one such example. We may not feel consoled by the message – we’re not meant to – but we can take heart from the fact that, out of such melancholy meditation (and it was very real to Larkin, as was the getting half-drunk at night as a way of coping with it) can come a great poem like ‘Aubade’.

Volveremos a vernos

volveremos tú y yo a decirnos bobadas

con tu siniestra magia;
todos, incluso tú
que sólo te diviertes
con el dolor ajeno,
tú que sonríes cuando
anuncian un desastre
o sueñas en la cama
repugnantes traiciones;
todos (tú también, monstruo
que surges de la sombra
y salpicas de sangre
las oscuras callejas)
fuisteis niños un día.
Piensa en tu infancia ahora.
En el llanto nocturno
que precedía al sueño,
en aquel desamparo
de enfrentarte a la muerte
siempre que te acostabas
al borde del abismo
que era tu cuarto entonces,
dominio del Diablo.
En las sórdidas aulas
del colegio, sembradas
de crueldad doméstica,
torpemente regidas
por mediocres psicópatas
expertos en maldades.
En el jardín ruidoso
donde el juego reinaba
con su ilusoria dicha,
con su mezcla infernal
de prestigio y espanto.
Todo el mundo vivió
aquel horror primero
que algunos inconscientes
se obstinan en seguir
llamando paraíso.

JEKYLL Y HYDE

Pero, ¿por qué no voy a ser
al mismo tiempo sueño y vida,
ser el médico y ser la herida,
Luis de Granada y Baudelaire?

¿Por qué te avergüenzas de mí
cuando me vuelvo Don Quijote?
¿Por qué no quieres que se note
cuando me ataca el frenesí?

La locura no me divierte,
pero es peor aún el tedio.
Seré, si tú no hallas remedio,
Jekyll y Hyde hasta la muerte.

Memoria y libertad

Reflexión moral sobre la anatomía

Hay mujeres que hacen daño
en el pecho del que muere
                         al contemplar
la contención exacta de su carne
                                la refrigeración
blanda de sus cabellos limpios
y el pretexto caedizo de sus ropa

                                  otras

frente a unos párpados cerrados murmullos
fracasadas sintaxis

High Times, Hard Times

A años luz.

Picture you upon my knee,
Just tea for two and two for tea,
Just me for you
And you for me alone.
Nobody near us
To see us or hear us,
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations.
We won't have it known, dear,
That we own a telephone, dear;
Day will break and you'll awake
And start to bake a sugar cake,
For me to take
For all the boys to see.
We will raise a family,
A boy for you, a girl for me.
Oh, can't you see
How happy we would be?

a nonbeliever in my own

Learnig to unlove you
will take a little time
but now I’ve got forever that’s OK
to take you off the books
untangle all the hooks
I’m looking forward to it in a way

Getting to forget you will be like tearing down
The temple of your image in my mind
Take one last look around
And burn it to the ground
Unloving you will take a little time

To treat you like a fever, like my known enemy
To be a nonbeliever in my own memory

I wake up every morning no more than half awake
A headful of ideas in my mind
A belly full of lead
And strangers in my bed
Unloving you will take a little time, oh really
Unloving you will take a little time

done her wrong y las relaciones

Vuelvo a ver a Bobby: escalofríos.

Frankie and me we were lovers
Oh Lordy how we could love
Swore we'd be true to each other
Just as true as stars above
I was her man, she caught me doing her wrong
My luck in poker was fading
When a new gal caught my eye
I gambled, I tried to change my luck
With a chick named Nellie Bly
I was Frankie's man but I was doing her wrong
Yeah! Frankie came looking to find me
Yes, she wasn't looking for fun
For in her sweet loving hand
She was totin' a 44 gun
To shoot her man if he was doin' her wrong
Well Frankie walked into the bar room
And right there in front of her eyes
There was her loving johnny
Making love to that Nellie Bly
I was her man, she caught me doing her wrong
Frankie, I beg, please don't shoot me
Well they'll put you away in a cell
You know they'll put your where the cold wind blows
From the hottest corner in hell
I'm your man, I know I done you wrong
Easy on the roll, real easy
Easy on the roll, real slow
Roll me over real gently
'cause my wound hurts me so
Well I was her man
Well I done her wrong
Well Frankie told johnny
Well this is the end of my song
I was her man, well I done her wrong
Well, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
Done her wrong

there was always a piano in the house

Enorme.

en un mundo tan pequeño

En un mundo tan pequeño,

una burbuja interior
de millones de colores,
un jardín de mantequilla.

Con eso que te daba
no estaría mal,
con eso crecería...

Hasta escuchar su latido
que bombea al espacio exterior.
Qué anestesia tan profunda,
qué sobredosis de amor.

En un mundo tan pequeño
sólo cabemos tú y yo,
aumentando el microscopio
lo haremos en blanco y negro.

Ha explotado la burbuja,
ahora está dentro de mí,
cementerio de animales.

Qué anestesia tan profunda,
qué sobredosis de amor
en un mundo tan pequeño.

Pues nada, una travesía más que comenzamos. De momento, una vez al mes.
