Bessie Smith (1894-1937) la grabó en 1927, diez años antes de dejarnos, es decir, con 33. Nos dejó con 43. Dinah tenía 3 años cuando Bessie la cantaba. Dinah nació en 1924 y murió en 1963, con 39 años.

Ni la una ni la otra son imaginables hoy en día. Eran otros tiempos, ciertamente. No sé si mejores; probablemente para la mayoría de la gente que le tocó vivirlos, no. Pero sí es cierto que, artísticamente hablando, uno añora lo que producen determinadas épocas, determinados fragores biográficos.  Y todo esto sin mentar al tal George Brooks, que menuda ocurrencia la suya con lo del asesinato pasional y juez... Trato de imaginar una letra semejante y una orquestación similar trasladada a nuestros días y me viene a la cabeza lo ramplón o lo kitsch. Así que disfrutemos de ellas sin necesidad de acabar en los locales nocturnos del Bowery viejo para abrigarnos del frío invierno neoyorquino. Aunque una, qué queréis que os diga, yo sí me tomaría.
